Plant Care & Gardening : When to Trim Tulips

Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen. And in this segment
we’re going to talk about when is the best time to trim tulips? Now tulips are gorgeous,
they’re one of the spring blooming flowers that I love in my garden. They come up in
February and March, and they bloom beautifully through April even into May. But then by the
end of May they kind of die back and the flowers are gone, and they look tacky. So there’s
some rules that you can follow on how to trim them back. So as soon as the blooms; theoretically
as soon as the blooms die back you should top them. So you cut the blooms off and leave
the foliage. So if the foliage is green you should leave it alone but if it’s a brown
you can cut it out. That’s kind of my rule of thumb. Because as long as those leaves
on the bulb, the energy will go back down to the bulb and it’ll multiply quicker. So
the best time to cut back your tulips is whenever they turn brown. So even if the stem is green
but the flower is brown, you could always top it off by cutting it half way down and
then as soon as the brown leaves on the bottom are completely finished, and then cut it down
to the ground.
